چکیده

The Alcohol breath test (ABT), commonly known by its commercial name as the “Breathalyzer,” is a device made popular in the United States and used by law enforcement agencies throughout the world to assess and determine the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of individuals suspected of driving under the influence (DUI). 2, 3 With increased popularity of the automobile in the late 19 century, traffic accidents caused by individuals driving while intoxicated became a serious problem. While legislation was created making it illegal to operate a vehicle under the influence, no quantitative method existed which could assess the intoxication level of an individual. Instead, subjective field tests were used to assess drunkenness relying on identifying certain behaviors in the suspected individual. Blood tests eventually became available to determine BAC, but since drawing blood roadside from a suspected individual is not a viable option for law enforcement officials, another method was needed which could determine intoxication or BAC indirectly and in a non-invasive manner.

Random Breath Testing (Policy Brief)

The use of breath tests to assess the extent of alcohol use has become a standard procedure in the enforcement of impaired driving laws in many countries around the world. In Canada, if a police officer has a reasonable suspicion that a driver has consumed alcohol, he or she can demand the driver provide a sample of breath for analysis using an approved screening device (ASD). “Random” or “mand...

Lack of Effect of Over-the-Counter Oral Care Strips on a Forensic Breath Alcohol Testing Device

There have been a considerable number of cases litigating the validity of the forensic breath alcohol test and the potentials for a false positive ethanol reading. Recently, a claim asserted that the prior use of an over-the-counter (OTC) “oral care strip” normally used to suppress halitosis of the oral cavity, produced a false positive result when a subject was given a breath alcohol test duri...

Best practice in random breath testing and cost-effective intensity levels

Background Random breath testing (RBT) aimed at general deterrence of drink-driving has been shown to be more effective than targeted alcohol screening from patrol cars aimed at apprehending drink-drivers. The European PEPPER study’s meta-analysis of 40 evaluations found that the largest crash reductions were achieved by Australian methods of RBT (involving use of highvisibility bus-based testi...

Effectiveness of Sobriety Checkpoints for Reducing Alcohol-Involved Crashes

The goal of sobriety checkpoints is to deter drinking and driving by systematically stopping drivers for assessment of alcohol impairment, thus increasing the perceived risk of arrest for alcohol-impaired driving. This review examines the effectiveness of random breath testing (RBT) checkpoints, at which all drivers stopped are given breath tests for blood alcohol levels, and selective breath t...

Ph . D . Paradigm Shift for the Alcohol Breath Test

The alcohol breath test (ABT) has been used for quantification of ethyl alcohol in individuals suspected of driving under the influence for more than 50 years. In this time, there has been little change in the concepts underlying this single breath test. The old model, which assumes that end-exhaled breath alcohol concentration is closely related to alveolar air alcohol concentration, is no lon...
